The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) ordered all Nigerian citizens to link their NIN to their SIM cards, with the promise to block the SIM cards of citizens who haven’t successfully linked their NIN to their SIM cards by April. That is the main reason why we, at Amevng, decided to write this Ultimate Guide to teach you how to link your NIN to your mtn, glo, Etisalat, and Airtel SIM cards.

Another reason is that there are a lot of strange broadcast messages floating around Whatsapp where you are told to click strange links to register your NIN on your SIM card.

To link your NIN to your Airtel SIM card, you can either dial *121*1# from your chosen Airtel SIM Card or use the My Airtel App.

2.1: To link your airtel SIM card to your NIN using the USSD code, all you have to do is dial *121*1# on the Airtel SIM you want to link to NIN. Follow the instructions and enter your 11-digit NIN Number and press Ok or Send.

(3) How to Link your NIN to your 9mobile SIM Card

You can link your NIN to your Etisalat SIM card using the USSD Code *200*8# or with this link.

Here are the steps:

3.1: Simply dial *200*8# from your 9mobile SIM card and get on with linking your NIN to your SIM card. You just need to follow the instruction, enter your NIN number and press OK or Send.

3.2: You can also go to https://9mobile.com.ng/NIN, then click or press the “Verify and Link your NIN now” button.

(4) How to Link your NIN to your Glo SIM Card

To link your NIN to your Glo SIM card, you can either dial the USSD code *109*yourNIN# or text your NIN to 109.

Earlier on when the NCC made the announcement for the compulsory link NIN to SIM policy, the method for linking your glo SIM to your NIN was texting UpdateNIN NIN FirstName LastName to 109. However, Glo changed that method, probably to make things easier for users.

SECOND METHOD: Link your NIN to SIM Using the Official NIMC App

Here are the steps for linking your NIN to your MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile SIM Cards using the official NIMC App:

STEP 1: Go to Google Play Store and search for “NIMC”, don’t fall for any fake apps. The name of the official NIMC app is “MWS: NIMC MobileID”. The creation team is NIMC Mobile ID Team. I’m giving you this info so you don’t make the mistake of downloading an unofficial app and giving scammers access to your details and NIN.

Here’s the link to download the app from Google Play Store.

STEP 2: After downloading and installing the NIMC app, your first challenge is to successfully log into the NIMC app.

Why? Because it’s really difficult. If you check the app on Google Play store, you’ll notice it has a rating of 2.6 stars (really poor). This is because the app’s OTP verification system just doesn’t seem to work all the time. It has specific hours when you can smoothly complete OTP verifications (At least, as at the time I used the app for my Sim registration). The time that I, my family, and friends that I told about the app, were able to successfully log into the app was in the morning between 6am-9am.

To log in, you will be required to enter your 11-digit NIN number. The app will search for and find the number linked to your NIN during registration and you can state if you’re still using the number or not.

STEP 3: If you’re still using that phone number you can proceed to the next step where you’ll be sent an OTP code. Enter that OTP code and you’ll be required to enter a 6-digit PIN that protects your credentials. Then you can log in.

STEP 3: After successfully logging in, you can add your number through the menu item, “My Devices”. You have the chance to enter 7 different numbers there as your main phone numbers. You will still be sent OTPs (One-time passwords) to the individual numbers to ensure that you’re truly the owner before the number is added.

Register only 7 numbers with your NIN

SPECIAL TIP: Apart from the optimum time of 6am-8am, you can also try using the app around 11pm when I did this tutorial.

When you’re done with adding your phone numbers, you can exit the app. Of course, you can also log back into the app with your 6-digit PIN.

How to Retrieve your NIN Number

Have you forgotten your NIN digits, well you can retrieve it easily by dialing *346# from the number you linked with your National Identification Number during your NIN registration. If it’s the right SIM, you will get your NIN Number.

In Conclusion,

If you want to link your NIN to your SIM, you can try any of the two methods or both just to ensure that your number doesn’t get blocked. Also, please try to avoid clicking the links attached to fake “Register your NIN” messages like the one in the picture I posted at the beginning of this article. Don’t let scammers get access to your precious personal details. Stay Safe on the web.
